This month’s topic:

Baie de Hann is an ASSET not an open SEWER !!!

This is the slogan of the people living in the Baie de Hann in Dakar, Senegal.

Once considered one of the world’s most beautiful bays (comparable to the bay of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil), today the “Baie de Hann” is one of the most polluted bays worldwide, an ecological catastrophe.

The rich have abandoned or sold their homes. Only the poor continue to live in midst of the domestic and industrial waste. They continue to demand that local and national public authorities close the channels that daily discharge tons of untreated waste on the beach and into the sea.

Watch the video below to listen to the people living in the Baie de Hann.

As industrialization and urbanization continue to expand along the 700km of the Senegalese coastline, so does the production of disposable wastes. Nearly 80% of household and industrial wastes, generated by the 3 million people living in Dakar, are discharged directly into the Atlantic Ocean without prior treatment, destroying our marine resources.

Ecofund and the Institute of Environmental Jobs and Metrology (IMEM), led by scientist and expert Adams Tidjani, founder of IMEM and Professor at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar (UCAD), take this issue on, debating with representatives from Senegalese industry, government, and civil society.

Why?

The objective of these debates is to present as many diverse views as possible, in order to produce real-time solutions that can ensure the buy-in of private sector, local populations and public authorities.
