COP Biodiversity: Can We Still Save the Animals?

A devastating ratio: for every dollar invested in protecting nature, 30 dollars are spent on its destruction. Relaying the global insights from COP17 in Yerevan, ARTE’s Mapping the World delivers a sharp geopolitical analysis of our planet's biodiversity crisis.

At the COP17 on biodiversity in Yerevan, Armenia, UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a stark warning about the financial imbalance undermining global conservation efforts. Despite the international commitment to the "30x30" target—protecting 30% of the Earth’s land and sea surfaces by 2030—the gap between political rhetoric and funding remains massive.

ARTE’s cartographic breakdown highlights the relentless human drivers accelerating the sixth mass extinction: overfishing, industrial expansion, desertification, and intense wildfires transforming vulnerable ecosystems across Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

However, the program concludes with visual proof of environmental resilience. When human societies actively fund and enforce ecological protection, nature bounces back. Successful case studies like the Carry-le-Rouet marine reserve in France or tiger sanctuaries in India show that strictly monitored conservation areas work.

For our Ecofund community, this is a powerful reminder that targeted local funding is key to healing ecosystems.
